How to Prepare Fufu with Light Soup.

Fufu is a staple enjoyed by all tribes in Ghana. It is mostly served with light soup, groundnut soup or palm nut soup.

In this guide, I am going to show you:

  • how to prepare fufu with light soup
  • four different ways to cook fufu.

4 ways to prepare Fufu

Fufu is a thick paste obtained after pounding one or a combination of boiled yam, cassava, plantain and cocoyam in a mortar with a pestle and turning with the hand to obtain the desired texture.


Ingredients for Fufu preparation.

  • 4 pieces un-ripened Plantain or cocoyam
  • 3 tubers of Cassava or yam
  • Water
  • Salt

Steps to preparing fufu.

Method 1 (Using Blender)

Steps

  1. Peel plantain and cut into cubes
  2. Peel cassava, scrape and de-stringe then cut into cubes
  3. Pour cassava and plantain cubes into a large bowl. Wash with water to clean
  4. Transfer cassava and plantain cubes into blender and add 450ml of water.
  5. Blend into a silky smooth paste.
  6. Transfer mixture into a saucepan and place on medium heat.
  7. Stir mixture consistently, to avoid any lumps for about 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and it forms a thick steamed.

  1. Add remaining 50ml of water to the Fufu, cover the saucepan then reduce  heat  and steam for 8 to10 minutes
  2. Increase heat to medium fire and stir the mixture till well combined.
  3. Pour Fufu into a bowl then smear the surface with a teaspoon  of water ( to prevent any film forming on the surface and leave to cool down completely)
  4. Shape into a ball and serve with your favourite soup

Method 2 (Using Mortar and Pestle)

Steps

  1. Peel plantain and cut into cubes
  2. Peel cassava, scrape and de-stringe then cut into cubes
  3. Pour cassava and plantain cubes into a large bowl. Wash with water to clean
  4. Pour cubes into a large saucepan. Add water to cover, cover with lid and boil for 20 minutes under high heat until tender and soft
  5. Remove from fire and drain water and uncover lid.
  6. Wash mortar and pestle with water
  7. Pound until mixture is well combined and smooth

  1. Serve with light soup or Groundnut soup

Method 3 ( Using Fufu Machine)

Steps

  1. Peel plantain and cut into cubes
  2. Peel cassava, scrape and de-stringe then cut into cubes
  3. Pour cassava and plantain cubes into a large bowl. Wash with water to clean
  4. Pour cubes into a large saucepan. Add water to cover, cover with lid and boil for 20 minutes under high heat until tender and soft
  5. Remove from fire and drain water and uncover lid.
  6. Allow it to cool down completely before pouring into machine to it sticking to the machine.
  7. Grind cubes with machine, adding little water when necessary until well combined and smooth
  8. Roll into balls and serve with soup of choice

Method 4(Using Fufu Flour)

Steps

  1. Pour 2 handful of fufu powder into a clean dry pot and mix with water into a thick paste.

  1. Ensure to stir properly to prevent lumps in fufu
  2. Put on medium heat and stir. As it gets thicker, begin to knead into a dough
  3. When fufu forms a neat dough, and doesn’t taste floury, fufu is ready.
  4. If it still taste raw of floury cover and allow to cook for another 15mins kneading every 5mins to prevent the bottom from burning.
  5. When done, remove from heat.

The fufu is ready. Now let’s prepare the light soup.
