Mopane worms are a large edible caterpillar also known as madora. It is a staple dish in Zimbabwe. These worms are a good source of protein and are believed to contain three times the amount of protein as beef. In addition to this, mopane worms are known to contain phosphorus, iron and calcium, which are all beneficial to our health. They can be dried, fried, cooked or smoked.

300g of mopane worms

1 onion (chopped)

2 tomatoes (chopped)

1 beef cube

2 tablespoons of cooking oil

1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper

Salt (to taste)


What Mopane Worms Can Be Served With

Mopane worms can be served with pap or eaten with vegetables and salad.

  1. Wash the mopane worms and put them in a saucepan.
  2. Add some water and boil the mopane worms till they become soft.
  3. Rinse the worms and add another cup of boiled water.
  4. Pour some cooking oil into it and stir.
  5. When it starts cooking, add your chopped onions, tomatoes, seasoning cube, cayenne pepper and salt. Then stir.
  6. Allow it to simmer until it thickens and serve.
