Brief About Kaklo
Kaklo is a famous local snack with a spicy taste that can be enjoyed especially for lunch. Kaklo means ‘fried’ in our Ghanaian Language. Apart from the kaklo which is made from overripe plantains, there is also another type known as ‘agbeli kaklo’, which is prepared using cassava.
Today, we are going to learn how to prepare kaklo made from overripe plantain. Stay with me as we discover the recipe for kaklo or spicy plantain balls.
Ingredients for Kaklo
- 3 overripe plantains
- 1 cup of flour
- 1 small onion
- 1 teaspoon of powdered pepper
- 1 tablespoon of grounded ginger
- Vegetable oil
What Kaklo Can Be Served With
Kaklo can be served with roasted groundnuts, cooked beans or can be eaten with a sauce.

- Blender / Earthenware bowl and mortar.
- Ladle /spoon
- Draining spoon.
Steps to prepare Kaklo
- Peel plantains and cut them into a bowl.
- Blend the plantain with a blender or use an earthenware bowl and mortar or any means you are comfortable with to crush the plantain.
- Add in your onion, ginger, salt and powdered pepper and mix till it combines well.
- Next, add in your flour.
- Heat your oil and use a spoon or ladle to fetch desired amounts of the mixture into the heated oil.
- Fry and turn over till it is well fried and golden brown.
- Remove them from oil and drain excess oil.
- .Serve unto a plate or tray lined with kitchen tissue paper.
