Ingredients
  

  • all-purpose flour
  • teaspoon salt
  • unsalted butter, melted
  • Water, as needed
  • Extra flour for dusting

Instructions
 

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Mix well.
    Add the melted butter to the flour mixture and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add water, a little at a time, and knead the dough until it comes together. The dough should be soft and pliable, but not sticky. Adjust the amount of water or flour as needed.
    Once the dough is formed, cover it with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for at least 15-20 minutes. This resting period allows the gluten to relax, making the dough easier to roll out.
  • After the resting time, divide the dough into equal-sized portions and shape them into balls. Flatten each ball slightly with your hands.
  • On a clean and floured surface, take one dough ball and roll it out into a thin, round circle using a rolling pin. Dust with flour as needed to prevent sticking.
    Heat a tawa or non-stick skillet over medium heat. Place the rolled-out roti onto the hot tawa and cook for about 30 seconds or until bubbles start to appear on the surface.
  • Flip the roti and cook the other side for another 30 seconds.
    At this point, brush the cooked side of the roti with melted butter. Flip again and brush the other side with butter as well. Cook for a few more seconds until both sides are lightly browned and cooked through.
  • Remove the butter roti from the tawa and place it on a plate. Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.
    Serve the butter roti warm and enjoy it with your favorite Indian dishes or as a standalone snack.

Notes

The key to achieving a flaky texture in butter roti is to knead the dough well and allow it to rest before rolling it out.
Adjust the amount of butter based on your preference. You can use more or less butter depending on how rich and buttery you want your roti to be.
For a healthier option, you can substitute part or all of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour.
