ALOO POSTO

Aloo posto is a recipe made with potatoes, pasted poppy seeds and spices. It is of Bengali origin. Aloo means potatoes and posto means poppy seeds. This dish can be a good fit for many occasions.

Ingredients

  • 800 grams of baby potatoes (peeled)
  • 60 grams of poppy seeds
  • 2 green chillies (chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons of mustard oil
  • ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 150 mls of water
  • Salt (to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of nigella seeds

 

What Aloo Posto Can Be Served With

Aloo posto can be served with puris or dal and rice.

Steps

  1. Soak the poppy seeds in a bowl containing hot water for about 2 hours.
  2. Put the poppy seeds into a blender, add 4 tablespoons of the water used to soak it and blend till it forms a paste.
  3. Heat some mustard oil in a heavy saucepan. Do this over medium heat and add the nigella seeds and green chillies.
  4. Fry for about 8 seconds and add the peeled baby potatoes. Stir and let it fry for about 5 minutes.
  5. Add the turmeric powder and stir. Cover with the lid and let it fry for 5 more minutes.
  6. Stir again and pour the poppy seed paste. Let the paste cover the potatoes.
  7. Add water and allow it to boil under low heat while covered for 15 minutes.
  8. Stir occasionally and add ½ teaspoon of sugar. You can add more water if you want a flowing consistency.
  9. Turn off the heat, dish some out onto a plate and serve.

 

Before you use the poppy seeds, ensure that they are fresh and not going bad. If they have gone bad, it can make the meal bitter.
