Ingredients

  • 1 small pumpkin (sugar or pie pumpkin variety)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Butter or olive oil (optional, for added richness)

  • Additional seasonings (optional, such as nutmeg, cinnamon, or garlic powder)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
    2. Begin by selecting a small pumpkin. Sugar or pie pumpkins are ideal for mashing due to their sweeter flavor and smoother texture.
    3. Wash the pumpkin thoroughly and cut it in half vertically. Scoop out the seeds and pulp using a spoon. You can save the seeds for roasting if desired.
    4. Place the pumpkin halves cut-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
    5. Bake the pumpkin in the preheated oven for about 45-60 minutes, or until the flesh is soft and easily pierced with a fork. The cooking time may vary depending on the size of the pumpkin.
    6. Once the pumpkin is cooked, remove it from the oven and let it cool slightly.
    7. Scoop out the flesh from the pumpkin halves using a spoon and transfer it to a mixing bowl. Discard the skin.
    8. Mash the pumpkin flesh using a potato masher or fork until you achieve a smooth consistency. If you prefer a creamier texture, you can also use a blender or food processor.
    9. Season the pumpkin mash with salt and pepper to taste. You can also add a pat of butter or a drizzle of olive oil for added richness.
    10. If desired, you can enhance the flavor of the pumpkin mash by adding additional seasonings like nutmeg, cinnamon, or garlic powder. Start with small amounts and adjust according to your taste preferences.
    11. Mix all the ingredients together until well combined.
    12. Serve the pumpkin mash warm as a side dish or use it as a base for other recipes.
