Tekka Maki is a sushi roll that comes from Japan. It consists of sushi rice, nori, and fresh raw tuna. The word "tekka" translates to "red hot iron," referring to the vibrant red color of the tuna used in this sushi roll. The sushi rice and raw tuna are tightly rolled in nori using a bamboo sushi rolling mat, leading to a cylindrical shape.
Ingredients
- Sushi rice prepared with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt
- Nori seaweed sheets
- Fresh raw tuna sashimi-grade
- Soy sauce for dipping, optional
- Water to wet your hands and prevent sticking
- Bamboo sushi rolling mat
- Sharp knife
Instructions
- Gather all your ingredients. Rinse the rice in the sink and drain, then prepare the sushi rice using a rice cooker. Once cooked, season the rice with a mixture of rice vinegar, sugar, and salt while it's still warm and gently fluff the rice.
- Having rice already cooled, place a sheet of nori shiny side down on the bamboo sushi rolling mat and spread rice on the nori leaving about half an inch of nori uncovered at the top edge. Spread rice evenly.
- Cut tuna into strips and add the strips of fresh raw tuna horizontally across the center of the rice and start rolling the sushi using the bamboo mat, gently press and roll to shape the roll tightly.
- After rolling, use a sharp knife to slice the roll into individual pieces and arrange the Tekka Maki slices on a serving plate and serve the Tekka Maki with soy sauce for dipping, if preferred, and additional wasabi on the side.
