Sticky tofu recipe
Tofu is a dish prepared by coagulating soy milk and then pressing the resulting curds into solid white blocks of varying softness: silken, soft, firm, extra (or super) firm. Tofu is also known as bean curd in English. It is a traditional component of East Asian and Southeast Asian cuisines and has been consumed in China for over 2,000 years. In modern Western cooking, it is most often treated as a meat substitute.
Ingredients
- 1 block of firm or extra firm tofu drained, pressed and cut into cubes or slices
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup or brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
- 2 cloves garlic finely minced
- Sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- Sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish optional
Instructions
- Make ready all your ingredients and preheat your oven. Pat dry your tofu with paper towels and set it aside.
- In a sizeable bowl, add the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, honey or brown (or maple syrup), minced garlic, grated ginger, and cornstarch, whisk until well combined and then add the tofu slices in the sauce mixture to evenly coat them.
- After coating, heat oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat and fry the tofu pieces that have been well coated with the sauce in the pan, leaving the extra sauce in the bowl.
- Fry tofu on each side until they become golden and slightly crispy or very crispy if you do not want to bake it. Now, transfer the slightly crispy tofu to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until the tofu turns crispy on the outside.
- While baking, take the sauce that was left in the bowl and heat it in a small saucepan over medium heat. Let it simmer and thicken for a few minutes.
- After the tofu is done, please remove it from the oven and drizzle the thickened sauce over the tofu.
- You can also garnish it by sprinkling sesame seeds and chopped green onions on top of it.
- Serve the tofu hot with rice or your choice of side dish.
