Sake maki recipe
Sake maki is a type of sushi roll that typically consists of salmon (known as "sake" in Japanese) and sometimes includes other ingredients like cucumber, avocado, or seaweed. The roll is wrapped in rice and seaweed (nori) and is a popular and delicious choice in Japanese cuisine.
Ingredients
- Nori seaweed sheets
- Sushi rice
- Fresh salmon fillet thinly sliced or Sashimi-grade salmon or smoked salmon
- Rice vinegar
- Sugar
- Salt
- Soy sauce
- Wasabi optional
- Pickled ginger optional
Instructions
- Gather all your ingredients and equipment. Cook the sushi rice according to the package instructions. Once done, mix in a combination of rice vinegar, sugar, and salt to taste to create seasoned sushi rice. Then allow it to cool.
- Slice the salmon into thin strips.
- Take a bamboo sushi rolling mat and place a sheet of nori on it. Wet your hands with water to prevent the rice from sticking, then spread a thin layer of sushi rice equally onto the nori, leaving a small space about half an inch at the top. Lay your thinly sliced salmon pieces across the rice, and ensure that it is evenly distributed on the nori sheet. You can add any of your favorite vegetables to make it more crunchy at this point.
- Use the bamboo mat or sushi mat to carefully roll the sushi tightly starting from the bottom edge, using gentle pressure to shape it into a cylindrical shape. Seal the edge of the nori with water and then allow the roll to rest for a minute, seam side down, to help it keep its shape.
- Use a sharp knife to slice the roll into individual pieces, about 1 inch wide. Serve the Sake Maki with soy sauce for dipping, and optionally with wasabi and pickled ginger on the side or anything you prefer.
