A flavorful and creamy cheese fondue made without alcohol, ideal for dipping bread, vegetables, or other favorite dippers.
Equipment
- mixing bowl
- heavy bottom pan
- wooden spoon
Ingredients
- Gruyère cheese, shredded
- all purpose flour
- garlic
- vegetable broth
- ground nutmeg
- lemon juice
- french bread
- apple slices
- Emmental cheese, shredded
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded Gruyère and Emmental cheeses with the all-purpose flour. Toss the cheese and flour mixture until the cheese is coated evenly. This helps to prevent clumping.
- Rub the inside of a fondue pot or a heavy-bottomed saucepan with the halved garlic clove. This imparts a subtle garlic flavor to the fondue.
- Pour the chicken or vegetable broth into the fondue pot or saucepan. Heat it over medium heat until it starts to simmer. Avoid boiling.
- Gradually add the coated cheese mixture to the simmering broth, stirring continuously in a figure-eight motion with a wooden spoon until the cheese is completely melted and smooth.
- Ensure the cheese melts gradually to avoid clumping. Stir constantly to achieve a smooth consistency.
- Once the cheese is melted and smooth, add the lemon juice and ground nutmeg (if using). Stir well to incorporate the flavors.
- Transfer the fondue pot to the fondue burner or a trivet to keep it warm.Serve the non-alcoholic cheese fondue with a selection of dippers like cubes of French bread, blanched vegetables, apple slices, etc.
