When preparing chicken for your cat, it’s essential to ensure it’s cooked thoroughly to kill any harmful bacteria. Here’s a simple recipe for cooked chicken that is safe and suitable for your feline friend
Homemade Cooked Chicken for Cats
While cats love chicken, it should be part of a balanced diet. Consult your veterinarian about appropriate portion sizes based on your cat's size and dietary needs.
Equipment
- large pot
- cat bowl
- wooden spoon
Ingredients
- boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
- water
- cat safe vegetables
- low sodium chicken broth
Instructions
- Trim any excess fat from the chicken breasts or thighs. Fat in moderation is fine, but remove large fatty portions.
- Place the chicken pieces in a pot and add enough water to cover them completely. If you're using vegetables, you can add them to the pot as well.
- Bring the water to a boil and then reduce the heat to low. Let the chicken simmer gently for about 20-25 minutes or until it's thoroughly cooked. Ensure there's no pink in the middle, and the internal temperature of the chicken reaches at least 165°F (74°C).
- Remove the chicken from the pot and let it cool completely. Once cooled, shred the chicken into small, bite-sized pieces. Cats prefer smaller pieces that are easy to chew.
- Place the shredded chicken in your cat's dish. You can add a little bit of the cooking liquid (broth) for added moisture and flavor if your cat prefers it. Remember, if you've used vegetables, ensure they are safe for cats before serving.
- Store any leftover cooked chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. If you've made a large batch, consider freezing individual portions and thawing them as needed.

Notes
- Avoid Seasonings: Do not add any seasoning, salt, onions, garlic, or spices to the chicken. Cats have sensitive digestive systems and don't need added seasonings.
- Monitor Portion Sizes: While cats love chicken, it should be part of a balanced diet. Consult your veterinarian about appropriate portion sizes based on your cat's size and dietary needs.
- Consult Your Vet: If your cat has specific dietary requirements or health issues, consult your veterinarian before introducing new foods into their diet.
