How to make chicken parmesan
Chicken Parmesan, also known as Chicken Parmigiana, is a popular Italian-American dish that features breaded and fried chicken cutlets topped with marinara sauce and melted cheese, typically mozzarella and Parmesan. The dish is then baked until the cheese is bubbling and golden. It is often served over a bed of pasta, such as spaghetti or fettuccine, or with a side of garlic bread. Chicken Parmesan is known for its combination of crispy and tender chicken, savory tomato sauce, and gooey, melted cheese, creating a flavorful and comforting meal that has become a staple in many Italian and Italian-American restaurants.
Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 2 cups breadcrumbs (you can use plain or seasoned)
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 cups marinara sauce
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
- Cooked pasta or spaghetti for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- If the chicken breasts are very thick, you can slice them in half horizontally to make thinner cutlets. Season the chicken with salt and pepper.
- Set up a breading station with three shallow dishes. Put the flour in one dish, beat the eggs in another, and combine the breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan in the third.
- Dredge each chicken breast in the flour, shaking off the excess. Then dip it into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, coat the chicken with the breadcrumb and Parmesan mixture, pressing the crumbs onto the chicken to adhere.
- Heat the olive oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the breaded chicken and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown. The chicken doesn't need to be fully cooked at this stage, as it will finish cooking in the oven.
- Remove the chicken from the skillet and set it aside. In the same skillet, add the marinara sauce and heat it over medium heat.
- Place the partially cooked chicken cutlets back in the skillet on top of the marinara sauce. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over each chicken breast.
- Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes or until the chicken is fully cooked and the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- Optionally, garnish with fresh basil leaves. Serve your chicken Parmesan over cooked pasta or spaghetti, with additional marinara sauce if desired. This recipe will give you a delicious and classic chicken Parmesan dish that's perfect for serving with pasta, a side salad, or garlic bread. Enjoy!

Notes
One important thing to note when making chicken Parmesan is to avoid overcooking the chicken. Overcooked chicken can become dry and tough. To ensure your chicken is tender and juicy, it's best to partially cook it in the skillet (as specified in the recipe) and then finish cooking it in the oven. This method allows the chicken to cook through without becoming too dry while the cheese melts and forms a golden crust. Additionally, using a meat thermometer to check that the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) will help ensure it's fully cooked without overcooking.
