Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • shallow dish
  • large skillet
  • cutting board and knife

Ingredients

  • beef strips
  • garlic
  • olive oil
  • paprika
  • cayenne pepper
  • salt and black pepper
  • onion
  • bell pepper
  • tomatoes paste
  • chicken broth
  • white wine
  • cream
  • parsley

Instructions

  • In a bowl, combine the minced garlic, olive oil, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper to create the beef marinade.
  • Place the beef strips in a resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for 1-2 hours, allowing the flavors to meld.
  • Heat a large skillet or frying pan over high heat. Add a bit of oil if necessary.
Remove the marinated beef from the bag or dish, letting any excess marinade drip off.
  • Quickly sear the beef strips in the hot pan for about 2-3 minutes until they are browned on the outside but still slightly pink on the inside. Remove the beef from the pan and set it aside.
  • In the same pan, add more oil if needed, and reduce the heat to medium.
Add the finely chopped onion, minced garlic, and chopped red chili pepper. Sauté for about 2-3 minutes until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant.
  • Stir in the chopped green bell pepper and continue to sauté for another 2 minutes.
Add the tomato paste to the pan and cook for an additional 2 minutes, stirring continuously to combine it with the other ingredients.
  • Pour in the beef or chicken broth and white wine (if using). Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for about 5 minutes to reduce and thicken slightly.
  • Lower the heat and add the cream, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Stir well and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld together.
  • Return the seared beef strips to the pan with the sauce. Stir to coat the beef evenly with the sauce.
Let the beef simmer in the sauce for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through.
  • Transfer the Beef Trinchado to a serving platter.
Garnish with chopped fresh parsley for a pop of color and added freshness.
  • Serve the Beef Trinchado hot, accompanied by rice, crusty bread, or traditional Portuguese rolls.
Enjoy the bold and spicy flavors of this South African favorite.
