Ingredients
  

  • all-purpose flour
  • cocoa powder
  • baking powder
  • baking soda
  • buttermilk
  • food coloring
  • granulated sugar
  • white vinegar
  • vanilla extract

  • eggs

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set this dry mixture aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the granulated sugar and vegetable oil. Mix until well combined.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
    Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a small bowl, combine the buttermilk and red food coloring. Mix until the color is evenly distributed.
  • Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk mixture. Begin and end with the dry mixture.
  • In a small bowl, combine the white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. It will fizz. Quickly fold this mixture into the cake batter until well combined.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
    Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and place them on a wire rack to cool completely. This will take approximately 1-2 hours.
  • In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and softened unsalted butter until smooth and well combined.
    Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, and continue to beat until the frosting is creamy and smooth.
  • Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread a layer of cream cheese frosting on top of one of the cakes.
    Place the second cake on top and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
  • Slice and serve your homemade red velvet cake. Enjoy the rich, moist texture and delicious cream cheese frosting.
