Equipment
- mixing bowl
- baking sheet
- parchment paper
- slotted spoon
- wire rack
- large pot
Ingredients
- high-gluten bread flour
- granulated sugar
- salt
- active dry yeast
- warm water
- eggs
- toppings
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then use your finger to poke a hole through the center. Stretch the hole to create a bagel shape.
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer. Using a slotted spoon, lower each bagel into the simmering water for about 30 seconds on each side. Remove and place them on a wire rack to drain.
- Beat the egg in a small bowl. Brush the tops of the bagels with the egg wash and sprinkle your desired toppings over them.
- Place the bagels on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Allow the bagels to cool on a wire rack for a few minutes. Slice, toast, and enjoy your homemade bagels with your favorite spreads or fillings.
