Ingredients
  

  • unsalted butter
  • all purpose flour
  • whole milk
  • pinch of salt
  • white bread
  • dijon mustard
  • ham
  • gruyere cheese
  • nutmeg
  • parsley

Instructions
 

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes until the mixture turns a light golden color, creating a roux.
  • Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to create a smooth sauce. Continue to cook and whisk until the sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Season the béchamel sauce with a pinch of salt, freshly ground black pepper, and a pinch of ground nutmeg. Remove it from the heat and set aside.
  • Lay out 8 slices of white bread. If desired, spread Dijon mustard on half of the slices.Place a slice of ham on each slice of bread.Sprinkle a generous amount of grated Gruyère cheese on top of the ham.
  • Spoon a few tablespoons of the prepared béchamel sauce over the cheese on each sandwich.
  • Place the remaining slices of bread on top of each sandwich to create a sandwich with ham, cheese, and béchamel in the center.Brush the top of each sandwich with melted butter.
  • Preheat your oven's broiler.Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and broil for about 3-5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Keep a close eye to prevent burning.
  • Remove the sandwiches from the oven, let them cool for a minute, and then slice them diagonally.Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired, and serve hot
  • Serve your homemade Croque Monsieur sandwiches as a delectable and comforting meal. They pair wonderfully with a fresh salad or a side of pickles.
