Homemade Soft Pretzel Recipe

Ingredients
  

  • all purpose flour
  • kosher salt
  • vanilla extract
  • granulated sugar
  • warm water
  • dry yeast
  • melted butter

Instructions
 

  • In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, active dry yeast, salt, and sugar. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes foamy.
  • Gradually add the all-purpose flour to the yeast mixture, mixing until the dough comes together. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until it's smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a long rope, about 20 inches in length
  • Shape each rope into a U-shape. Cross the ends over each other, then twist them once. Press the twisted ends down onto the curved section to form a pretzel shape. Place the formed pretzels onto the prepared baking sheet.
  • In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil. Carefully add the baking soda (it will bubble up) and reduce the heat to a simmer. Using a slotted spoon or spider strainer, dip each pretzel into the simmering water for about 20-30 seconds. This step helps create the classic pretzel texture.
  • Remove the pretzels from the water bath and place them back on the baking sheet. Sprinkle coarse salt over the tops of the pretzels. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the pretzels are golden brown.
  • If desired, brush the baked pretzels with melted butter for a glossy finish.
  • Allow the pretzels to cool slightly before serving. They are best enjoyed warm and fresh, but they can also be stored in an airtight container for a day or two.
