Ingredients
  

  • all purpose flour
  • baking powder
  • salt
  • unsalted butter
  • granulated sugar
  • eggs
  • vanilla extract
  • whole milk
  • heavy cream
  • powdered sugar

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line your cake pans with parchment paper.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In another bowl, use an electric mixer to cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients and the milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  • In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy and smooth.
  • Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with the heavy cream or milk. Mix until the frosting is smooth and spreadable. Add more or less powdered sugar to achieve your desired consistency.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • If needed, level the cake layers by trimming the tops to create even surfaces.
  • Apply a thin layer of frosting around the entire cake to seal in any crumbs. This is known as the crumb coat.
  • Generously frost the entire cake with a smooth layer of frosting. Use an offset spatula to achieve an even finish.
  • Decorate the cake as desired using piping bags, tips, sprinkles, edible flowers, or any creative elements that suit the occasion.
  • Place the cake in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to set the frosting. Once set, bring it out, light the candles, and celebrate the occasion!
