Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • elelctric mixer
  • spatula

Ingredients

  • unsalted butter
  • powdered milk
  • heavy cream
  • vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Make sure the butter is softened at room temperature. It should be soft to the touch but not melted.
  • In a mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream the softened butter until it becomes smooth and creamy.
  • Mix in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt (if using unsalted butter). The salt enhances the overall flavor.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, while mixing on low speed. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  • Pour in the whole milk or heavy cream. Start with a smaller amount and add more if needed to achieve your desired consistency.
  • Increase the mixer speed to medium and whip the frosting until it's light, fluffy, and well combined. This usually takes around 2-3 minutes.
  • Taste the buttercream and adjust the sweetness or flavor by adding more powdered sugar or vanilla extract if desired.
  • Once your cake, cupcakes, or cookies are cooled, use a spatula or piping bag to generously spread or pipe the buttercream onto your treats.
  • Unused buttercream can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Before using it, let it come to room temperature and give it a quick whip to restore its texture.
