Ingredients
  

  • ground beef
  • onion
  • garlic
  • carrot
  • frozen peas
  • vegetable broth
  • tomato paste
  • Worcestershire sauce

  • vegetable oil

Instructions
 

  • In a large pot, cover the potato chunks with water and add a pinch of salt.Boil the potatoes until they are tender and easily pierced with a fork.
  • Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.Add butter and milk to the potatoes, and mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. If desired, mix in grated cheddar cheese for added richness. Set aside.
  • In a large pot or saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.Add the chopped onions and minced garlic, and sauté until the onions are translucent and fragrant.
  • Add the ground beef or lamb to the pot and cook until browned and cooked through.Stir in the diced carrots, frozen peas, dried thyme, and dried rosemary. Cook for a few minutes until the vegetables begin to soften.
  • Pour in the beef or vegetable broth, tomato paste, and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Allow the mixture to simmer for about 10-15 minutes or until the liquid reduces and the flavors meld together.
  • Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F).Transfer the cooked meat filling to a baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  • Spoon the mashed potato topping over the meat filling, and use a fork to create a textured surface.
  • Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the mashed potatoes turn golden and slightly crispy on top.
  • Remove the Cottage Pie from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes
  • Slice into portions and serve this heartwarming South African delight with a side of green salad or your favorite vegetable medley.
