Equipment
- pastry cutter
- mixing bowl
- baking sheet
- oven
Ingredients
- self raising flour
- salt
- granulated sugar
- butter
- maas
- vanilla extract
- jam or cream for serving
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F) and line a baking sheet or tray with baking paper, if desired.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the self-raising flour, salt, and granulated sugar. Mix well to ensure all the dry ingredients are evenly distributed.
- Add the chilled and cubed butter to the dry mixture. Using a pastry cutter or fork, work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Create a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the maas (buttermilk) and vanilla extract.
- Using a fork, gently mix the wet and dry ingredients until a soft dough forms. Be careful not to overmix the dough.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and lightly knead it a few times to bring it together.
- Roll or pat the dough to a thickness of about 2.5 cm (1 inch).
- Use a round cookie cutter or a glass to cut out scones from the dough. Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet or tray, leaving a little space between each scone.
- Brush the tops of the scones with a little maas (buttermilk) or milk to enhance their golden color during baking.
- Bake the scones in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes or until they are lightly golden and have risen.
- Once baked, remove the scones from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack.

Notes
If you don't have self-raising flour, you can make your own by combining 2 cups of all-purpose flour with 3 teaspoons of baking powder and a pinch of salt.
For a touch of sweetness, you can dust the tops of the scones with a sprinkle of powdered sugar before serving.
Feel free to add raisins or dried fruit to the dough for a variation in flavor and texture.
These scones are best enjoyed on the day they are baked, but you can store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Simply reheat them in the oven before serving.
