Equipment

  • food processor
  • can opener
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • chick peas
  • olive oil
  • lemon juice
  • garlic
  • cumin
  • salt
  • water

Instructions

  • Drain and rinse the chickpeas thoroughly under cold water.
  • In a food processor or blender, combine the drained chickpeas, extra-virgin olive oil, freshly squeezed lemon juice, minced garlic, ground cumin, and a pinch of salt.
  • Blend the mixture until smooth. If the mixture is too thick, gradually add water (1 tablespoon at a time) while blending until you achieve the desired creamy consistency.
  • Taste the hummus and adjust the seasonings as needed. Add more salt, lemon juice, or cumin to suit your taste preferences.
  • Transfer the hummus to a serving bowl. Optionally, drizzle a little extra olive oil over the top and sprinkle with a pinch of cumin for garnish.
  • Serve the hummus with pita bread, vegetable sticks, crackers, or use it as a spread in sandwiches and wraps.

Notes

  • Tahini is a traditional ingredient in hummus, but this recipe offers a tahini-free alternative. Adjust the flavors and consistency according to your preference by adding more or less garlic, lemon juice, or olive oil.
  • If you prefer a smoother texture, you can peel the chickpeas before blending. Simply pinch each chickpea between your fingers to remove the outer skin before adding them to the food processor.
