Baking bread in the house recipe

Baking bread is the culinary process of preparing and cooking bread, a staple food made from dough consisting of flour, water, yeast, and often other ingredients like salt and sugar. The process typically involves mixing and kneading the ingredients to develop the dough's structure, allowing it to rise through fermentation, shaping the dough into a desired form, and then baking it in an oven until it becomes golden brown and develops a crust. Baking bread not only results in a wide variety of bread types, from crusty artisan loaves to soft sandwich bread, but it also produces the distinctive aroma and flavor that are synonymous with freshly baked bread. It is both a culinary art and a time-honored tradition enjoyed by people around the world for its satisfying taste and the sense of accomplishment it brings to home bakers.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter (optional, for added richness)
  • 1 tablespoon nutmeg powder

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water-sugar mixture. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This indicates that the yeast is active.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt and nutmeg. If you want to add oil or melted butter for extra flavor and moisture, do so now.
  • Pour the activated yeast mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir with a wooden spoon or a mixer with a dough hook attachment until a dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead it for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Add more flour as needed to prevent sticking, but don't overdo it.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.
  • Punch down the risen dough to release any air bubbles. Shape it into a loaf by folding the sides in and rolling it tightly. Place it in a greased or parchment-lined loaf pan.
  • Cover the loaf pan with a damp kitchen towel and let the dough rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) during the last 15-20 minutes of the second rise.
  • Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for a few minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Once the bread has cooled, slice it, and enjoy your homemade bread!
