How to make peanut butter

Peanut butter is a popular and versatile food spread made primarily from ground roasted peanuts. It's known for its creamy or chunky texture, depending on personal preference, and can be enjoyed in various ways. Peanuts are roasted to enhance their flavor before being ground into a smooth or slightly textured paste. Peanut butter is often used as a spread on bread or crackers, a filling for sandwiches, an ingredient in baking, or even in savory dishes. It's a good source of protein, healthy fats, and essential nutrients, making it a beloved pantry staple for many.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups unsalted dry roasted peanuts (you can also use raw peanuts and roast them yourself)

  • 2 tablespoons honey (optional, for sweetness)
  • 1-2 tablespoons

    peanut oil (optional, for creaminess)

  • ½ teaspoon

    salt (adjust to taste)

Instructions

  • If you're using raw peanuts, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the peanuts on a baking sheet in a single layer and roast them for about 10-15 minutes until they become golden brown. Skip this step if you're using pre-roasted peanuts.
  • Allow the roasted peanuts to cool for a few minutes.
  • Place the peanuts in a food processor. If you want creamy peanut butter, add 1-2 tablespoons of peanut oil. If you prefer it unsweetened, skip the honey. Add the salt.
  • Start by pulsing the peanuts. Then, run the food processor continuously for a minute or two. You'll notice the peanuts go from crumbs to a thick paste.
  • If the peanut butter is too thick, add more peanut oil, a little at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. If you'd like it sweeter, add honey, again adjusting to your taste.
  • Taste the peanut butter and adjust the salt or sweetness as needed. Process again to blend any additional ingredients.
  • Transfer your homemade peanut butter to an airtight container. It can be stored at room temperature for a week or two, or in the refrigerator for longer shelf life.
Now you have delicious homemade peanut butter ready to enjoy on toast, in sandwiches, with fruit, or in your favorite recipes!

Notes

One important thing to note when making peanut butter at home is to be patient during the blending process. When you first start processing the peanuts, they will go through stages of being crumbly, then clumping together, and finally turning into a smooth paste. This transformation takes time, so don't rush it. Keep the food processor running until you achieve the desired creamy consistency, and avoid adding too much oil or liquid at once, as it can make the peanut butter too thin. Patience is key to getting that perfect homemade peanut butter texture.
