Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces

  • ½ cup heavy cream

  • 1 teaspoon sea salt (adjust to taste)

Instructions

  • Place the granulated sugar in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously with a wooden spoon or silicone spatula until the sugar starts to melt. It will clump initially, but keep stirring until it turns into a smooth amber-colored liquid.
  • Once the sugar is completely melted and has turned amber, add the butter pieces one at a time while stirring continuously. Be cautious as it may bubble up.
  • Gradually pour in the heavy cream while stirring continuously. Again, be careful as it may bubble. Continue to cook and stir for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce is smooth and well combined.
  • Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the sea salt. Start with 1 teaspoon and adjust to your taste preference. You can add more salt for a stronger salted caramel flavor.
  • Allow the salted caramel sauce to cool for a few minutes in the pan, then transfer it to a glass jar or airtight container. Let it cool completely before sealing. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Notes

Now you have a delicious homemade salted caramel sauce to drizzle over ice cream, use as a topping for desserts, or enjoy straight from the spoon!
One important thing to note when making a salted caramel recipe is to exercise caution when handling the hot caramelized sugar. It becomes extremely hot and can cause severe burns if it comes into contact with your skin. When adding butter and cream to the caramel, it can bubble up vigorously, so use a saucepan with high sides to prevent any splattering. Always keep a close eye on the caramel as it cooks, as it can go from perfectly caramelized to burnt quickly. Additionally, add the cream slowly and gradually to avoid splattering. Safety measures and attention to detail are crucial to ensure a successful and safe salted caramel-making experience.
