Equipment

  • oven
  • mixing bowl
  • baking sheet
  • parchment paper
  • cooling rack

Ingredients

  • all purposeflour
  • milk
  • pwdered sugar
  • baking powder
  • vanilla extract
  • granulated sugar
  • egg
  • food coloring
  • unsalted butter

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, which should take about 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the egg and pure vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture. Beat until well combined.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix; just mix until the flour is incorporated.
  • Divide the dough in half and shape each half into a disk.
Wrap each disk in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. Chilling the dough helps it firm up and makes it easier to roll and cut.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  • Remove one chilled dough disk from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes to soften slightly.
On a floured surface, roll out the dough to your desired thickness (typically around 1/4 inch).
  • Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes from the dough. Place the cut-out cookies on the prepared baking sheets, leaving a bit of space between them.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are just starting to turn golden. Be cautious not to overbake; sugar cookies are best when they're slightly soft in the center.
  • Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  • Once the cookies are completely cooled, you can decorate them with royal icing, food coloring, sprinkles, colored sugar, or edible glitter. Get creative!
  • Let the icing dry and harden before storing or serving your beautifully decorated sugar cookies. Enjoy your homemade treats!
