Equipment

  • Candy thermometer
  • Medium-sized saucepan
  • wooden spoon
  • baking sheet
  • wax paper
  • Kitchen scissors

Ingredients

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon flavoring extract (e.g., vanilla, mint, or fruit flavors)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  • Prepare the Workspace:
Line a baking sheet with wax paper and dust it generously with powdered sugar. Set aside
  • Cook the Syrup:
.In a medium-sized saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, water, butter, and salt. Place over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves.
  • Boil to Soft Ball Stage:
Insert a candy thermometer into the mixture and bring it to a boil without stirring. Continue boiling until the temperature reaches 240°F (116°C), the soft ball stage.
This may take about 15-20 minutes.
  • Flavor and Color:
Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in your chosen flavoring extract and food coloring, if desired. Mix well.
  • Pull the Taffy:
Pour the hot taffy mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Allow it to cool slightly until it's safe to handle but still warm. Using buttered hands or kitchen gloves, start pulling the taffy, folding it over itself, and stretching it until it turns lighter in color and becomes firm (approximately 10-15 minutes)
  • Form and Cut:
.Roll the taffy into a long rope and use buttered kitchen scissors to cut it into bite-sized pieces.
  • Wrap and Enjoy:
Place each piece on wax paper and allow it to cool completely. Once the taffy is completely cool and set, wrap each piece in wax paper and twist the ends to seal.
