Equipment

  • saucepan
  • poatato masher
  • frying pan
  • oven safe baking dish

Ingredients

  • beef
  • onion
  • carrot
  • frozen pea
  • garlic
  • tomatoes
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • vegetable broth
  • thyme
  • milk
  • rosemary
  • salt and black pepper
  • cooking oil
  • potatoes
  • unsalted butter

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F).
  • Start by making the mashed potato topping. Place the potato chunks in a large saucepan and cover them with cold water. Bring the water to a boil and cook the potatoes until they are tender and easily pierced with a fork, about 15-20 minutes.
  • While the potatoes are cooking, heat the cooking oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and sauté them until they become soft and translucent.
  • Add the minced garlic and diced carrots to the pan, and continue cooking for a few more minutes until the carrots start to soften.
  • Now, add the ground beef or lamb to the pan. Break it up with a spatula and cook it until it's browned and fully cooked.
  • Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, dried rosemary, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything together to evenly coat the meat and vegetables.
  • Pour in the beef or vegetable broth and add the frozen peas. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for about 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Adjust seasoning if needed.
  • While the meat filling is simmering, drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the saucepan. Add the milk and unsalted butter, and mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  • Transfer the meat filling to an oven-safe baking dish and spread it out evenly.
Carefully spread the mashed potatoes over the meat filling, creating a smooth and even layer.
  • Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the mashed potato topping turns golden and slightly crispy on top.
  • Remove the Herderspastei from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
