Classic Bangers and Mash Recipe

Bangers and Mash is a beloved British comfort food dish that combines sausages ("bangers") with creamy mashed potatoes. This hearty and satisfying meal is simple to prepare and packed with flavor, making it a favorite in pubs and homes.

Ingredients
  

For the Sausages ("Bangers")

  • :8 pork sausages (traditional British bangers if available)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

For the Gravy:

  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions
 

Prepare the Sausages ("Bangers"):

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sausages to the skillet and cook, turning occasionally, until they are browned on all sides and cooked through, about 15-20 minutes.
  • Reduce the heat if they are browning too quickly.

Make the Mashed Potatoes:

  • Place the peeled and quartered potatoes in a large pot of salted water. Bring the water to a boil and cook the potatoes until they are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes
  • Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.Add the milk and butter to the potatoes and mash them until smooth and creamy.
  • Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Cover to keep warm.

Prepare the Gravy:

  • In a separate saucepan, heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until it becomes translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute. Sprinkle the flour over the onion and garlic, stirring continuously for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.
  • Gradually whisk in the beef or chicken broth and red wine (if using). Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens and becomes a smooth gravy.
  • Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

4. Assemble the Bangers and Mash: Place a generous scoop of mashed potatoes on each plate. Arrange 2 sausages on top of the mashed potatoes.

  • Pour a generous amount of gravy over the sausages and mashed potatoes.

5. Serve:Bangers and Mash are traditionally served with green peas or a side of caramelized onions, but you can customize the sides to your preference.
