Ingredients
  

  • elbow macaroni
  • unsalted butter
  • all purpose flour
  • milk
  • shredded cheddar cheese
  • salt and black pepper

Instructions
 

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk constantly for about 1-2 minutes to create a roux, a thick paste.
  • Gradually pour in the milk while continuing to whisk. Cook and whisk until the mixture thickens and becomes smooth, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Reduce the heat to low. Add the shredded cheddar cheese to the sauce, reserving a small amount for topping. Stir until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  • Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and gently stir until the macaroni is coated evenly.
  • Serve the mac and cheese hot, topped with the reserved shredded cheese and any optional toppings you prefer, such as breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, or chopped parsley.
