Ingredients
  

  • all purpose flour
  • cinnamon
  • ginger
  • granulated sugar
  • egg
  • butter milk
  • lemon juice
  • cloves
  • vanilla extract
  • vegetable oil

Instructions
 

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground cloves, and granulated sugar.
  • Add the melted butter, egg, and buttermilk to the dry ingredients. Mix until the dough comes together.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.Cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rest at room temperature for 1 hour.
  • In a deep saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, water, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground cloves, fresh lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes to form a slightly thickened syrup.Remove the syrup from the heat and allow it to cool slightly.
  • On a floured surface, roll out the rested dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch.Cut the dough into strips, approximately 4-5 inches long and 1 inch wide.
  • Take each strip and make a lengthwise slit in the center, then twist the two halves around each other, pressing the ends to secure the shape.Heat vegetable oil in a deep saucepan or pot to 350°F (175°C) for frying.
  • Carefully drop a few twisted koeksisters into the hot oil and fry them until they turn golden brown and are cooked through (about 3-4 minutes per batch).Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried koeksisters from the oil and transfer them directly into the warm syrup.
  • Allow the koeksisters to soak in the syrup for a few minutes, then remove them and place them on a wire rack to drain excess syrup.
  • Serve the Cape Malay Koeksisters while they are still warm, and enjoy their tender texture and delightful spice-infused sweetness.
