Equipment

  • Air fryer

Ingredients

  • Firm tofu (one thick slice measuring)
  • Dark soy sauce(of your choice)
  • Honey or vegan
  • Grated ginger
  • Garlic clove, minced
  • Chinese five spice or cinnamon + star anise
  • Black pepper
  • Fresh coriander (cilantro), to serve
  • Cashew nuts, chopped, to serve (Its optional)

Instructions

  • Drain the tofu, and squeeze it between two towels to remove any excess water. Cut it into 1cm dice.
  • Heat the oil in a sizable frying pan, and add the diced tofu.
  • Cook over medium heat for a few minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure it doesn't get burnt until the tofu is golden brown and crispy all over as you want it OR put tofu in an air fryer and fry for some minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in a small jug, combine the soy sauce, honey, ginger, garlic, and the Chinese five spice or cinnamon together with the black pepper.
  • Add the fried crispy tofu to the sauce, and mix to combine. Allow the mixture to bubble a little, until it has reduced by half, and is thick and sticky.
  • Serve the honey soy tofu topped with grains (rice, quinoa, barley, and more), pasta, veggies (stir fry, air fried, roasted, and more) or fresh coriander and chopped cashew nut.
