Pour water into a saucepan, add salt and bring to boil.
Add the maize meal or milled maize to the boiling water.
Cover with the lid.
Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about five minutes.
Remove the lid and stir with a large fork or wooden spoon.
Cover again with the lid, reduce the heat and leave the pap to steam for thirty minutes. Stir the food with a fork or wooden spoon occasionally while cooking.
Add the butter to the pap and stir with the fork before removing the saucepan from the fire.
