Shawarma bread ( Pita Bread) Recipe
Shawarma bread is made with simple ingredients making it easy and simple. You can make pita bread either in the oven or on the stovetop. Follow the step by step tutorials to get yours done.
Ingredients for making Shawarma bread
1 cup warm water
2 teaspoons active dry or instant yeast
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons salt
1 to 2 teaspoons olive oil (optional)
Mix the warm water and yeast together( Allow it sit for about five minutes until the yeast is dissolved)
Add 2 cups of the flour salt, and olive oil. Stir until a shaggy dough is formed.
Sprinkle a little of the extra flour onto your work surface and knead dough for about 5-7 minutes, until the dough is smooth and stretchy
Grease a bowl with olive oil. Place the dough in it and grease the dough with little oil. Cover it with a plastic wrap for 1 hour until dough double in size.
Punch the dough to remove air and turn it out onto a lightly floured work surface.
Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces. Flatten each piece into a thick disk.
Using rolling pin, roll one of the pieces into a circle 8-9 inches wide and about a quarter inch thick.( Sprinkle with a little extra flour if its starting to stick). Repeat with the rest of the dough
Heat the oven to 450° if using oven. Place a large baking sheet or baking stone on the middle rack to heat.
Arrange the rolled-out pitas on the baking stone or baking sheets. Bake for about 3 minutes. Flip it over onto the baking sheet( pita will start to puff up after a minute).
Remove it from the oven and cover with a clean towel.
If you are using skillet, warm over medium-heat. Grease pan with little oil in the pan
Lay a rolled-out pita on the skillet and bake for 30 seconds, until you see bubbles starting to me. Flip and cook for 1-2 minutes on both side, until large toasted spots appear.
Remove and store in an airtight bag. Serve warm
