Have you wondered if it’s possible to make Cola syrup at home then this is the season to try it out. By using actual fruits, sugars and spices which are available in stores, you can make yours with this simply and easy steps.
- Zester or fine grater
- Tsp and tbsp measurements
- Heavy based pan
- Large bowl
- Muslin or cheesecloth
- Hand whisker/ Food processor
- Cola syrup is good for relieving nausea, settling an upset stomach and calming the urge to vomit.
- It is perfect as a base for occasional beverage making for those who wish to avoid carbonation.
Ingredients for Cola Syrup
2 Medium Oranges grated zest
1 Large Lime grated zest
1 Large Lemon grated zest
1/8 teaspoon ground Cinnamon
1/8 teaspoons ground Nutmeg
1 section of a star anise pod, crushed
1/2 teaspoons dried Lavender Flowers
2 teaspoons fresh Minced Ginger
11/2 inch piece of Vanilla bean, spilt
1/4 teaspoon Citric Acid
2 cups + 2tbsp Plain Sugar
1 tbsp brown Sugar
3/4 teaspoon caramel colouring
Place a heavy pot over a medium heat then bring 2 cups of water to boil.
Add zests, cinnamon, nutmeg, star anise, lavender, ginger, vanilla pod and citric acid in the boiling water.
Reduce the heat to low and cover pot with lid. Allow it to simmer for about 20 minutes.
Transfer sugars to a large bowl, add caramel colouring and mix them together with a spoon or whisker or in a food processor, whirl the sugars together for one minute.
Line a sieve or colander with a double thickness of cheesecloth or muslin. Place this on top of the bowl containing the sugars.
Remove pot from fire after 20 minutes and pour it through a lined sieve into a clean bowl. Squeeze the juice out from the cloth from the cooked zests using your hand
Gently stir in the sugars until it dissolves in the liquid
Pour into a glass or jar and refrigerate for 1-2hours until chilled.
